Someone I admire as an environmentalist and animal protector surprised me with this statement on twitter."Parents-respect you-I must ask:How can u decide its a good, healthy&safe idea to give a young obese kid, sick&on antibiotics a sugary huge Sodaw/nachos&cheese when other options r right next to them.We rbuilding a nation of Obese mouth-breathing kids hopped up on sugar&chemicals How are our kids going to think?Lets PLEASE put our best foot forward and start nourishing our little ones-stop poisoning them? Please?Thanku" Ian Somerhalder
I couldn't agree more, but I felt there was something missing, something that he didn't say and that is we need to teach them by example. This is where my brain went into overdrive and started to think. Yes we should teach our children proper nutrition and discourage them from putting chemicals into their bodies that will effect them for years to come. Yet if we offer them the healthiest diet in the world, fully balanced and organic but we fill ourselves up with the very chemicals we deny them we teach them nothing.
We need to change our own eating habits, we need to stop killing ourselves with diabetes, heart attacks and cancer. Science and doctors have told us over and over again that many of the diseases that are affecting Americans are do to there pour diet. In the pursuit of speed we have neglected ourselves, we work longer hours, we take fewer vacations, we forget to relax, and most of all, we forgot how to nourish ourselves. We go to the McDonalds, Burger Kings, Subways and Starbucks for a "quick bite to eat" but the food there is nothing more than over processed, chemically flavor induced empty calories. Many women and men have forgotten how to cook, they need prepackaged or prepared food that they can through in the microwave or in the oven and out comes a meal. I think I remember seeing that on the Jetsons (it's an old saturday morning cartoon)but in all seriousness the food we put into our bodies and our childrens bodies has become more toxic than beneficial. Instead or fresh juice, we drink pop or frozen nutrient reinfused juices, instead of water we drink pure chemicals that are added to the water to give it flavour, instead of fruit syrup we drink pop and these are the very same things we give to our children. How are they supposed to develop properly into healthy young adults when we feed them what is quick and convenient instead of what is healthy and nutritious.
We should change our own eating habits. With one small change of choice we could affect the whole world. Imagine if you will that everyone stopped eating McDonalds and ate truly nutritious organic food instead. We would improve not only our health and that of our children but we would improve the health of the planet. Without using pesticides and herbicides the soil would come back to life and our food would once again taste the way it should. Without the production of these harmful chemicals we would help clean the air. We would have water that is free of harmful chemicals and toxins that require more chemicals to purify it.
All this and more would be the result of us teaching our future generations how to eat a healthy and nutritious diet. So to sum things up. We put all sorts of resources into conservation, the environment, the animals and yet "We underestimate our most important resource and that is our youth."-Ian Somerhalder this is paraphrased but I believe it's close enough. In order to invest in our youth and our future let's be the change we want to see.
