Over the last few months I have been searching out articles that show what we are doing for the planet, for animals and for humanity. This, is my conclusion.
Did you know that there are many articles and web sights about how we freed the slaves in the south? Yet we turn a blind eye to the fact that there are countries all over the world where slavery still exists. It even exists in countries where we "freed the slaves". The only thing that happened is we learned to call them by different names, sweat shop workers, mail order brides, back room masseuses. Did you know, that in order to live the life we do, there are an average of 35-40 "slaves" making it possible? But in order to find any news about what we are doing today to solve the situation, you have to get creative on how to find it. Speaking of being creative in order to find out about things that go on in the rest of the world well it's been just as much of a struggle.
There are tons of articles about the negative effects we have on the planet, from countries not curbing there emissions to oil spills. There are only half as many articles about what we are doing right. If we continue going the way we are my grandchildren will not have clean drinking water or have fresh air. Are we really a people that is negatively motivated as opposed to positively? Or is it really the case, that there are far more things going wrong than right. Does the proverbial one step forward two steps back apply to what we are doing for the environment?
While we are on the subject of the environment let’s talk about animals. I have an equally hard time finding positive animal stories. We seam to be lousing more species than discovering new ones. There are far more stories of how we harmed the animals than how we saved or sheltered them. How can we say we are doing everything to protect the animals in the wild, when our shelters are overflowing. What are we doing to protect the animals in our own back yard? I never hear any one say that in order to be worth saving, an animal had to be wild. Again the one step two step scenario when are we going to take that dance and turn it around or perhaps invent a new one altogether.
We all seam to want to be the change, make a difference, make an impact and yet none of us are willing to stand up and do it. When it comes to actually doing something that will make that impact we want. We look to our neighbor before we make a decision. Have we really been brought up to be followers not leaders? Are we really nothing more than a flock of mindless sheep? We look where the government and news papers tell us to look, but how many of us look beneath the surface to see what is really going on. Sure on the surface things look great, governments call for stricter laws, and promise of change. How much of that is really being fulfilled. Just like the majority of us the governments are all talk with little action.
Sure we recycle a bottle here, and a pop can there in the grand scheme of things that really doesn’t make the impact we are looking for. When we have the ability to make a bigger impact to really make a difference we can’t lift the proverbial pen. We talk about what we do and how much we do, but when it comes to backing up our actions, we back down. Why is it when it comes to uniting our voice with others to make a change we have a hard time getting people to sign a petition. Are petitions really that terrifying? Why does no one have the strength to write there political leaders or talk to there local media. So tell me what is the point of screaming when no one is listening, when we stay silent when when people are listening. Well this is my voice! This is my scream! I wonder how many will hear me.
