Remembrance day is quickly coming upon us here in Canada.
With that, a controversial campaign has come out led by a group of students in Ottawa. They want to replace the traditional red with one. Their sentiment is that they want to promote peace not war. My position is if they want peace they wouldn't be starting a war. Many veterans and civilians are quite upset with the notion, however the students plan on continuing. They don't understand, or possibly don't care, what the red poppy stands for. Perhaps the have forgotten that the poppy stands for all the fallen soldiers in all the wars which Canada fought in. The soldiers protected this country so we could have the freedom of speech, which these students now exercise so (pardon the pun) freely. I understand that people want peace. I fully support the sentiment, however, I will never forget those who fell on my behalf The soldiers gave their lives so that we can live in a country where we have the open sky, without oppression, without persecution and without poverty. If you want to remember the soldiers and thank them for our peace now and in the future, perhaps they could try different avenues for expressing that desire. I have a suggestion for them why not have a white rose or perhaps a white rose with a poppy, or put a white dove in the center of a the poppy. My point is, there are many different ways to show your desire for the symbolism of future peace, without forgetting those who fell.
